Waste Management reports that there will be another round of garbage can delivery. If you haven't received yours yet, you may still be on the delivery list.
Waste Management is the provider for Union Township. Weekly garbage collection and monthly recycling is mandatory for all residents. If you are not signed up, you must call Waste Management at 1-800-866-4460 to sign up for service and inform the National Call Center that you reside in Union Township, Washington County, PA. The National Call Center has occasionally confused Union Township with other Union Townships, of which there are many, and several in the State of Pennsylvania. The township staff cannot assist with this. If you are told to do this, it is possible they are looking at requirements for another Union Township. Waste Management will invoice each customer directly for this service.
If a Holiday falls on or before your service day, service will be one day later. If the Holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there will be no change in service.
If your garbage pick-up was skipped, please call the local route manager at 724-516-4811 or the Waste Management website is www.wm.com.
Recycling is mandatory for all residents and businesses.
For information on commercial, small business and self-employed recycling and reporting requirements, please see the “Commercial” menu item.
For residents, standard curb-side recycling is picked-up once a month by Waste Management. Residents are required to use a properly marked recycling container, either one purchased from the Municipal Building, or purchased at any home center which is imprinted with the recycling logo. Clear plastic bags which are available in home centers may also be used. It is important that the bags are clear so that the contents can be viewed. Cardboard boxes clearly marked “RECYCLING” can also be used.
The Township recycling container is $15 per container and can be picked up at our office. Payment for recycle bins is by check or money order only, we do not accept cash.
Please note that cartons are recyclable and are to be included in single stream curb side recycling for Waste Management.
Curb side recycling is generally picked up the 2nd Monday of each month unless there is a conflict with a holiday. For a copy of the one-page recycling calendar that lists all items collected curbside, please click the following link: Recycling 101
Home Pick-Up Service of household hazardous waste is available to all residents at the following number 1-800-449-7587 which is a separate telephone number and division of the company than the number on your bill for Waste Management. For information on the HHW program and a list of what can be picked up at your home through the HHW program, please see the following link: WM HHW Info
Also, check the posts on the home page for any advertised recycling events. Pennsylvania Resources Council advertises recycling events for items such as used tires, building materials (reuse event), and other hard to recycle items on their website at www.prc.org or www.prc.org/programs/collection-events/ or call PRC at 412-488-7452.
Washington County and the DEP hold Recycling Events throughout the year. A list of these events can be viewed at the Washington County Web Site at the following link: http://www.co.washington.pa.us/index.aspx?NID=177

Please check our announcements or your newspaper for our Fall Leaf Pick-Up which is scheduled in late October early November, one day a week for 2-3 different weeks. Please remember that all branches must be bundled. Also, biodegradable bags must be used for the leaf pick-up – no plastic bags. The leaf pick-up is handled by the Township road crew and pick-up can occur at any time of day, starting as early as 7:00 a.m. For this reason, it is best to get your leaves and branches to the curb the day before.
The Township has been notified of an agency that has both a restaurant pick-up service and drop-off for used cooking oil. You can access the website: Link
